My Thoughts On: Himouto! Umaru-chan Episodes 1-2

It’s been a while since I last posted, so why the fuck not, let’s write about weebtaku imoutos for a bit.

First, some background. Himouto! Umaru-chan was originally a manga by Sankaku Head that began in 2013 and is still ongoing. Just recently this Summer anime season it was picked up by Doga Kobo, who are known for Myself;Yourself, 11eyes, Yuyuyuri, Love Lab, GJ Bu, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, and more recently (last season) Plastic Memories. So basically, they made several good anime, especially Gekkan Shoujo, Gekkan Shoujo being one of the best animes of last year and god dammit when’s season 2.

Umaru-chan is an anime about a brother and sister living together in an apartment. The sister is still in high school, and is thought to be the perfect girl there, being kind, helpful, smart, pretty, everything and all things perfect, and the brother is an adult working at a company, so for once we only have one high school student. But the thing with the sister, named Umaru, is that she may be perfect outside, but when she is at home she is a grade-A weebtaku goddess. The goddess part is my opinion, but just roll with it because SHE’S A GODDESS. She watches anime, plays games, reads Jumpu, and buys anime things on online auctions, and is just the ultimate weebtaku. And it’s fucking wonderful.

The very, very first thing that got me hooked to this anime was…well, the anime shitposter gif, but putting that aside, the real very first thing was the opening. The opening is amazing. It makes reference to Monster Hunter, Mario Kart and Pokemon within probably fifteen seconds, and has a perfect transition from her perfect self to her weebtaku goddess self within the song itself. It’s a great opening, go listen to it. Or go watch the anime. You choose.

The next thing that hooked me on this anime was Umaru herself. Just look at her. Look at that small chibi form, and don’t tell me that this girl is not the most adorable weebtaku you’ve ever seen. Can you do it? I don’t think so. Now go look at her friend from Akita with an accent that comes out on occasion and tell me she is absolutely fucking adorable, and after that I’ll get on topic. Anyway, Umaru is just a wonderful character in her own right. For once, we don’t see a sister who has either an absolute crush on her brother, or has an absolute crush on her brother she hides by being a tsundere. Instead, she uses the fact that she’s an adorable little sister to get her way, which is nothing short of what an actual adorable little sister would do because sisters are not fucking saints, I’ll tell ya that much.

And finally, the last thing that makes me almost positive I’ll be watching this every week, the damn humor of this show. Umaru-chan is funny. Really, really funny. I almost thought it was a 4-koma because of how funny it was (Which I was disappointed to find out that was not the case, but only slightly). It’s simply just an exaggeration of the otaku life style, and I can enjoy it because of that because hell is it enjoyable. It’s a funny and entertaining slice of life that I cannot get enough of and just cannot wait for the next several episodes. So please, if you are a fan of comedy, slice of life or even both, go check this anime, I’ll tell you it’s amazing.

Also, Ebina has an Akita dialect, and I cannot tell you how much I love Japanese dialects and how much I love recognizing them, so that’s just perfect.
